The village of Plainfield voted on Monday night to not allow cannabis sales.

In the region, the village joins other communities like Naperville and Bolingbrook who have chosen to ban licensed dispensaries, cultivation centers and related businesses to sell recreational cannabis within the municipal limits. The village of Sugar Grove has several trustees on the fence and Village President Sean Michels has stated he feels the board is leaning against allowing recreational sales.

Recreational cannabis possession of up to 30 grams for adults in Illinois over 21 will be legal on January 1st. Nearly every local community is considering zoning and sales tax amounts if they choose to allow cannabis sales.  

In Plainfield, several trustees voiced a range of concerns for reasons to opt out of allowing sales. This was trustee Cally Larson who echoed comments from Trustee Brian Wojowski about consumption enforcement, said selling cannabis could, “greatly impact all.”

One vote was made against opting out by Trustee Harry Benton.

The motion to prohibit cannabis sales passed 5-1.
