Curaleaf to open Wednesday in Provincetown.
PROVINCETOWN — Cape Cod’s first retail marijuana dispensary is set to open Wednesday after receiving the blessing of the Provincetown Licensing Board on Tuesday night.
The town’s first-ever hearing for a marijuana business license lasted less than eight minutes.
“I think we all know that this is a new venture for the town,” board Chairman Robert Cameron said. “No one has any idea how it’s really going to turn out. I hope it turns out really positively.”
Curaleaf’s recreational marijuana store is located at 170 Commercial St., underneath Joe Coffee and Cafe, and it plans to have a soft opening at noon Wednesday.
A grand opening is planned for 11 a.m. Feb. 6.
“We are very excited to bring the first adult-use cannabis dispensary to Cape Cod,” Patrik Jonsson, the president of Curaleaf Massachusetts, said in a statement. “Provincetown is a vibrant community where we plan to hire over 30 people and become engaged with the cultural activities, charities and local initiatives that are important and make the Outer Cape and Provincetown so special.”
The store will be open seven days a week. Hours during the winter and early spring will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Come May, the store plans to be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily through September, Jonsson told the board.
There were few questions for Curaleaf at Tuesday’s hearing. One audience member asked when the business would open, and a neighbor expressed concerns in a letter about people consuming marijuana in their courtyard after tea dances at the nearby Boatslip Resort and Beach Club.
The board asked Curaleaf to come back to its June 9 meeting for an update.
“Just so we can review how things are going,” Cameron said. “See what problems have, haven’t come up, and we can just have a team discussion about what we can do about it.”
The store has been in close discussions with Police Chief James Golden, and Jonsson said he was willing to work with the Police Department to address any concerns that arise.
Curaleaf is based in Massachusetts and is one of the largest cannabis companies in the U.S.
The marijuana industry has been moving slowly on the Cape compared with the rest of the state. Only one business has opened before Curaleaf. Triple M currently operates a medical dispensary in Mashpee. There are plans for other retail stores in Mashpee, Provincetown, Brewster, Eastham, Wellfleet and Truro.
Before Curaleaf, the closest retail marijuana stores to the Cape were in Wareham and on Nantucket. Triple M also plans to open a recreational store in Plymouth next week.
