YPSILANTI, MI – An Ypsilanti man attacked by his partner with a samurai sword was stabbed multiple times for allegedly failing to buy marijuana for his attacker, according to the victim’s statements to police.

Neil Patrick Wasinski, 28, was charged on Jan. 18 with assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and assaulting or resisting police after being arrested for attacking her boyfriend Jan. 16 with a 21-inch samurai sword at the Arbor One Apartments in Ypsilanti, records show.

Wasinski, or Nalla as she is known, is listed as a male in court documents but referred to as she in police records. A call made to Wasinski’s attorney was not immediately returned.

The intent to murder charge was dismissed at district court after Wasinski pleaded no contest to the remaining two charges during her preliminary examination, Feb. 13, records show.

One arrested in stabbing reported at Ypsilanti apartment complex

Police were called to the reported stabbing shortly after noon where they found the victim, a 23-year-old man, smoking a cigarette and pressing a bloody towel to his side, according to an Ypsilanti Police Department report obtained by MLive/The Ann Arbor News through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The man, who identified himself as Wasinski’s boyfriend of one-and-a-half years, told police he was attacked after he failed to buy marijuana for Wasinski, the report states.

After repeatedly punching the victim’s ribcage, Wasinski grabbed the sword and started stabbing at the victim inside Wasinski’s apartment, the report states.

Still armed with the sword, Wasinski chased the victim outside into the parking lot before returning to his apartment after a neighbor took the victim into his residence across the lot, the report states.

The victim suffered multiple stab wounds to his arm and torso near the armpit. He was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in critical condition where doctors discovered one of his lungs had collapsed in the attack, records show.

The boyfriend has since recovered.

Police found Wasinski in her apartment at the complex, but she refused open the door, telling officers she didn’t want anything to do with police and to “please go away,” the report states.

Officers obtained a master key to the apartment and entered, arresting Wasinski, records show. Wasinski struggled with police as they took her outside and later spit on one of the arresting officers, according to the report.

Police found an unsheathed, blood-stained 21-inch katana on Wasinski’s bedroom floor, which was collected as evidence, the report states.

Wasinski would later tell officers she didn’t remember much about the incident, as she was intoxicated, but said the victim threw her on the ground and then she blacked out, the report states.

Wasinski had a few scratches on her neck and a small cut on her right eye, according to the report.

Wasinski is scheduled for sentencing March 17 before Washtenaw County Trial Court Judge Carol Kuhnke. She is currently lodged in the Washtenaw County Jail with bond set at $100,000.

Assault with a dangerous weapon is punishable by up to four years in prison.
