An East Sandwich man has been charged with selling marijuana after police conducted surveillance in the man’s neighborhood over the weekend.

Deputy Chief Michael Nurse said that residents of the Lakewood Hills neighborhood have filed multiple complaints about Matthew Butchard, 25, of Woodridge Road, claiming that he is selling drugs.

“We get a lot of calls from the neighborhood because he’s driving the neighborhood crazy,” Deputy Chief Nurse said.

Using the information, Deputy Chief Nurse instructed members of the department to conduct surveillance in the area on Sunday, March 8.

Around 7:25 PM, Officer Matthew Cotter reported seeing a gray vehicle pull up to Mr. Butchard’s house and leaving 30 seconds later. The vehicle left at a high rate of speed and was stopped a short time later by Officer Nathan Reid.

The driver of that vehicle told Officer Reid that he had just dropped Mr. Butchard off at home after taking him to a marijuana dispensary in Mashpee. The driver was given a citation for speeding.

At 7:49 PM, Officer Cotter saw Mr. Butchard leave the house on a bicycle toward Lakewood Drive. Officer Cotter said that the cul-de-sac at the end of the street is a known spot for Mr. Butchard to distribute narcotics.

A vehicle seen leaving the area a short time later was stopped. The occupants of the vehicle admitted to police that they had just purchased an ounce of marijuana from Mr. Butchard for $120.

As a result of the incident, Mr. Butchard was arrested and charged with distribution of a Class D drug. He was arraigned in Barnstable District Court on Monday, March 9. He was released on personal recognizance and will have a pretrial hearing on April 22, 2020.

“The folks in Lakewood Hills did a great job of keeping us in the loop,” Deputy Chief Nurse said. “It’s because of that information that we were able to effectively grab this guy.”

Mr. Butchard is known to the department and has faced charges in the past for providing minors with alcohol and cigarettes.
