ORLAND — Nearly 500 cannabis plants, 28 roosters and four firearms were discovered Thursday on an 18 acre parcel in Orland.

After numerous complaints from the public, law enforcement officials from multiple agencies executed a search warrant Thursday on the parcel at 6387 County Road 18, according to a press release issued Friday afternoon by the Glenn County Sheriff’s Department. A total of 485 cannabis plants were eradicated from two different grow sites and four firearms were seized.

Detectives found 28 roosters, which evidence indicated were being raised and used for illegal cockfighting, the release said. The roosters were seized pending prosecution.

Detectives spoke with Jesus Cervantes-Godinez, 25, at the grow site and he was ultimately arrested for the cultivation of cannabis and possession of cannabis for sale, the release said.

Roger Montalvo, 37, was identified as the person leasing the acreage, the release said. Upon investigation, detectives had probable cause to believe Montalvo was responsible for maintaining a place or property for the purposes of the cultivation of cannabis, illegal possession of cockfighting roosters and animal cruelty. A complaint will be sent to the District Attorney’s Office requesting criminal charges.

Recreational use of cannabis became legal in California in 2018 after voter passage of Proposition 64 in November 2016.

Glenn County prohibits any outdoor cannabis to be grown in all zoning districts. The ordinance prohibits the delivery of cannabis.

It is still a crime to sell cannabis in California — or to possess it with the intent to sell it — other than with both a state and local license.

The warrant service involved detectives with the Glenn Investigations and Narcotics Task Force, Glenn County Sheriff Deputies, Glenn County Deputy Probation Officers, Orland Police Department Officers as well as the Glenn County District Attorney’s Office.
