HOUGHTON — The Houghton City Council approved a special use permit for a business looking to open a recreational marijuana shop in Houghton.
Lume Cannabis Co., owned by the Evart, Michigan-based Atittude Wellness, plans to open a location along Razorback Drive. They are looking to construct a building on lot 12, next to Keweenaw Gem & Gift. The building would be about 2,688 square feet, according to a project description submitted to the Planning Commission.
The Planning Commission voted to forward the request to the City Council at its previous meeting.
City Manager Eric Waara said the next step would be a site plan review at the Planning Commission level.
Lume has 10 recreational or medical marijuana locations in Michigan, including Negaunee. It is also expanding to a number of other locations in the state, including Iron Mountain and Sault Ste. Marie, according to its website.
Lume is the second marijuana retailer to be approved for a special use permit, following Northern Specialty Health in June. Under ordinances approved by the City Council in July, there is no cap on the number of marijuana retailers that can operate in the city. However, zoning restrictions bar them from being located within 1,000 feet of places such as schools and churches. That restricts them to a band of space along Razorback Drive.
