Two people were arrested after police seized cannabis worth $7.5 million.

The Bermuda Police Drugs Unit made the seizure in partnership with the Customs Department on May 13.

The pair were apprehended and released on bail while investigations continue.

Detective Superintendent Nicholas Pedro, officer in charge of the Crime Division, said: “While we are aware of the legislative agenda towards decriminalisation of cannabis, we must emphasise that importation of cannabis remains illegal.

“Cannabis imported via this method is coordinated by persons involved in organised crime, with close links to the gang and gun culture currently plaguing our community.”

Mr Pedro said police were concerned recreational cannabis has a higher THC content than cannabis in regulated jurisdictions.

He added: “We take our responsibility for protecting the community seriously, and will continue to target organised crime groups that profit from the sale of illegal drugs, which ultimately harm our community.

“The Drugs Unit is investigating this case and will release more information as the case progresses.”
