A Stratford man police say was high on a cannabis-infused chocolate bar when he attempted to grab a police officer’s pistol Sunday morning was subdued with a Taser and arrested.
According to a news release from Stratford police, officers were called to a residence on Home Street shortly after 4 a.m. to help Perth County paramedics with a man who had consumed a large amount of cannabis edibles.
The man was found lying on the ground in his underwear and, when an officer and paramedics attempted to help him, became combative and assaulted the officer, police said.
When the officer made an effort to control the man to prevent being assaulted further, the man allegedly “attempted to remove the officer’s pistol from the holster,” police said.
Both the officer and the man sustained minor injuries, police said. The man was taken to hospital and released several hours later.
A 40-year-old man from Stratford was charged with assaulting a police officer, assault with intent to resist, and attempting to disarm a police officer.
Police alleged the man had consumed a full 185-gram cannabis-infused chocolate bar and hope the incident serves as a public reminder to follow Health Canada recommendations when consuming cannabis edibles, which can take up to two hours to take effect.
