CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — This week is National Poison Prevention Week, and the University of Virginia Health System and the Blue Ridge Poison Center are talking about common causes.
This is the 61st year for NPPW, which aims to highlight the dangers of poisoning for people of all ages and to promote prevention tips.
Cleaning products, medicines, pesticides and other household chemicals should always be kept up ad away, out of sight and the reach of children.
When it comes to poisonings involving teens or adults, they usually are medicine mistakes, alcohol overdoses, and the handling or breathing of harmful chemicals at home or in the workplace.
UVA Health and the BRPC say cannabis edibles and liquid nicotine products have been the cause of more calls to poison control centers in recent years.
Regarding cannabis edibles, they look like familiar treats to kids who may grab them to eat. However, adults can also have problems because dosing is tricky when it comes to edibles.
These products are unregulated and can be contaminated with substances that are not mentioned on the label.
Liquid nicotine products include e-cigarettes or vaping devices and the vape juice or e-liquid they contain.
Nicotine is dangerous of swallowed and can be absorbed through the skin as well. BRPC says just one teaspoon of liquid nicotine can be harmful.
When it comes to cleaning products, some are safe to use on surfaces but can cause injury if they come in contact with the skin.
Drinking household cleaning products can be very dangerous, and mixing them can lead to the creation of toxic gases.
Law enforcement officials have also seen an increase in counterfeit medications causing overdoses and deaths.
Such medications are made by drug traffickers and sold illegally, and many have been found to contain dangerous substances such as rat poison or the synthetic opioid fentanyl.
Health officials urge people to only buy medications from licensed pharmacies or health care providers and never take a prescription medication that is supposed to be for someone else.
