Worcester’s fourth recreational pot shop officially opened on Lincoln Street Wednesday morning, as Mission Dispensary expanded its sales to include adult-use marijuana.

But the party wouldn’t really get started until later.

“I got a pre-roll for an after-work celebration,” said General Manager John Matos, as he received the first recreational sale.

Mission Dispensaries is owned by 4Front Ventures, a multistate operator of cannabis-related businesses including cultivation, production and retail operations.

The Worcester location at 640 Lincoln St. is the company’s second facility in Massachusetts and may be familiar to many, as it has been open for medical patients for more than a year. Mission’s dispensary and production facility in Georgetown opened for adult-use sales Aug. 12.

The Cannabis Control Commission recently authorized the dispensary for adult-use sales, and the business held a ribbon cutting Wednesday to celebrate.

The facility in Worcester includes a separate 90,000-square-foot flower room and grow space that supplies the dispensary and where thousands of plants are carefully tended by workers, precisely and automatically watered and fed, and coaxed from nursery stock into full-grown plants with buds, also known as flower.

“The beauty of doing it inside is that you can control everything,” said Evan Bowman, head of cultivation.

And as the production crew, retail staff, and friends and family gathered at the entrance with the ceremonial oversized scissors, Matos offered congratulations.

“This is a huge win for all of us. Everyone should be super proud,” Matos said. “Let’s continue to do what we do.”
