CHICO, Calif. – Chico City Council voted 5-2 tonight to open up applications for the manufacturing, distribution and lab testing of commercial cannabis, which will be due Jan. 7.

“I think it’s good to expand the industry a little bit and just being able to have it here would be a good idea,” said Juhney Markha who lives in Chico.

Many people in Chico told Action News Now they are concerned about too much cannabis use in the city, but others tell us they are more concerned about the lack of access.

“I think it could especially since people do tend to have to leave town to go to dispensaries if they want to get medical cannabis and stuff like that, so I think it would be a good thing to have in Chico,” said Markha.

Several councilmembers were concerned with opening up more cannabis-based businesses in Chico, but said they believe the possible financial benefit is worth the attempt.

“Anything that’s going to produce revenue for the county, for the city. How is that not good?” said Bart Lindo who lives in Chico.

The council will receive more direction on delivery options of commercial cannabis in their next meeting. It’s unclear on how many manufacturing, distribution or lab testing centers would be allowed to open if any.

The council also voted to authorize the development of more than 400 affordable housing units throughout the city.

6 new apartment complexes will be built around Chico using affordable housing disaster recovery effort funds.
