A convention dedicated to all things marijuana kicked off in New Jersey on Friday – only a few months after adult-use recreational cannabis became legal in the Garden State.

The 420 Expo is being held at the New Jersey Convention & Expo Center in Edison on Friday. The three-day event is expected to draw in thousands of marijuana enthusiasts.

The organizers here say this event is about having fun responsibly, but it’s also going to be very heavy on education.

“It’s really a matter of raising awareness for cannabis – celebrating cannabis,” says event director and cofounder J. Handy. “Seminars, stage acts, on-site smoking section, 80 different vendors, VIP lounge, live music, food trucks. You name it, we got it.”

Celebrities like Tommy Chong and wrestler Rob Van Dam will be making appearances. Panels will help educate guests about cannabis. And while there is an outdoor designated smoking area complete with food trucks, there’s no smoking or vaping inside.

“No THC sales, infused foods, anything like that,” says Handy. “But it is considered a BYOC event, Bring Your Own Cannabis, so attendees can bring in their own and obviously we have our on-site smoking areas outdoors.”

Organizers say that since recreational marijuana was made legal in New Jersey, the landscape and the vibe have changed.

“We’d like people to come down and whether you’re a longtime cannabis user or you’re a newbie – we like to say canna-curious…come down, celebrate, have a good time, do it responsibly. That’s our No. 1 goal for everybody is to have a great time. Come here, get home safe and just celebrate, man,” says event cofounder Dan Davis.

The event runs until 11 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, it will run from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday will be from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m.
