Trustees in Godfrey have decided to place a licensing fee on cannabis-industry businesses. While there is apparently none actively seeking a spot in Godfrey, the board appears to be ready if and when that day comes.

But it was not a unanimous decision. The ordinance as proposed carried a fee of $1,500. Trustee Virginia Woulfe-Beile moved to lower the fee to $500, but only received the support of Karen MacAtee. Voting against lowering the fee were Mark Steward, Jeff Weber, and Ben Allen. Trustees then voted on the ordinance with the original $1,500 fee, and it passed 3-2, with trustees Stewart, Allen and MacAtee in favor, while trustees Weber and Woulfe-Beile voted against. Trustee Nathan Schrumpf was absent. Last fall the board approved the taxation of recreational cannabis at the maximum 3% allowed by the state.
