AHMEDABAD: In a first, Gujarat Anti-Terrorists Squad (ATS) late on Saturday night seized a unique narcotics substance- cannabis-infused cookies along with 16 units of pure extracts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) called shatters, from a restaurant in Bhat village of Gandhinagar.
This case is believed to be one such in the city and one of the rare cases in India. Earlier in June 2021, the Narcotics Control Bureau had busted a gang involved in selling weed or marijuana brownies.
The cops caught Jaykishan Thakor, 28, an arts graduate, the owner of the restaurant – Chicken Chulha from where the narcotics substance weighing 294.5 worth Rs 41,000, and his friend Ankit Kulhari, 26, a BBA degree holder both residents of Ahmedabad, in the case.
According to the ATS officers, they got an input that Thakor and Kulhari were selling the cannabis-infused cookies from their restaurant for around two months.
“The duo got the cookies manufactured from Himachal Pradesh mainly which they sold to their regular customers. They used to tell their customers that they had brought some new stuff from Himachal Pradesh and they would give the cookies to them for which they charged between Rs 4,000 to Rs 20,000,” said an ATS officer.
During their primary questioning by the Gujarat ATS officers, the duo told them that it was their first attempt only. But the further inquiry suggested that they had been selling it for at least four months in the restaurant which they opened around four years ago, said a police officer.
Sources in the police said that Thakor used to bring the cannabis cookies and cannabis oil or shatter from Himachal Pradesh which Kulhari used to deliver to their customers.
“Rather than pouring butter in the dough for the cookies, the narcotics sellers put the cannabis oil in the dough and made cookies from it. In such a case, no one could even doubt what has been cooked and sold because it looks like a normal cookie,” said a police officer.
The two accused were handed over to the special operations group of Gandhinagar and a case under the narcotics development and psychotropic substances act was registered with Adalaj police.
