MT. MORRIS TWP., MI — If marijuana were gold, a half-mile stretch of West Pierson Road might be Genesee County’s version of Fort Knox.
A fourth marijuana retailer is about to break ground in that limited area on a new project at 4174 W. Pierson Road, beginning with the demolition of a vacant gas station on the property by the end of this month.
Tyler Lecceadone, a spokesman for Orion Construction, which plans to build a new masonry and metal-panel exterior building on the property, said the dispensary should be built within a six-month construction window and will be a Cookies brand retailer.
Cookies is a San Francisco-based company that calls its Girl Scout Cookies strain of marijuana “one of the most sought-after cannabis strains in the world.”
The property that’s being redeveloped is a shuttered former BP gas station.
Orion Construction, based in Grand Rapids, announced redevelopment plans for the property and a new Gage Cannabis Co. store in Kalamazoo in its news release this week.
Township Supervisor Jolena Sims said whatever residents think about licensed marijuana dispensaries, the growth of the retailers along Pierson Road near I-75 has accomplished two goals — putting abandoned commercial property back into service and bringing new revenue to the township.
“They do bring in revenue, and they have made their properties look really nice,” Sims told MLive-The Flint Journal on Wednesday, Dec. 8. “They aren’t (working out of) raggedy buildings.”
Before Sims was elected, the township was among four municipalities in Genesee County that opted into the state’s medical marijuana program. It also allows for recreational marijuana retailers.
The supervisor said the businesses have not caused problems for township police.
The Cookies location is immediately east of Interstate 75, less than one-half mile from three other dispensaries — Light ‘N Up Provisioning, 4184 Pier North Blvd.; JARS Flint, 4326 W. Pierson Road; and Skymint, 4405 W. Pierson Road.
Skymint is located in a renovated former Denny’s restaurant, while JARS is located on the site of what was once a Bob Evans Restaurant.
