LITTLETON, Colo. – An initiative that would allow Littleton’s three existing medical marijuana dispensaries to sell adult use cannabis gathered enough signatures to qualify for the November ballot.

The initiative needed 4,419 valid signatures to qualify and while it’s unclear how many signatures proponents collected, Littleton City Clerk Colleen Norton informed them this week they had collected enough to have the initiative placed on the November ballot.

Littleton City Council will now take up the issue in August, where they’ll vote on whether to either implement the ordinance immediately or send it to voters in November.

“This November, we are asking voters to keep their cannabis tax dollars in Littleton instead of sending them to neighboring cities such as Denver and Englewood who already allow recreational sales,” said Kate Eckel, a Littleton citizen and an official proponent of the ballot initiative. “Every year, it is estimated Littleton will make anywhere from $700,000 to $1.5 million in sales tax revenue on adult use sales, while limiting these sales to just the three existing stores. These are dollars our community can use to bounce back from COVID-19, strengthen our city budget and contribute funds to city infrastructure such as repairing our roads.”

An April poll by Keating Research shows that 69% of Littleton voters support allowing existing medical marijuana dispensaries to sell adult use cannabis.
