An Ocala man with a dozen prior arrests was charged with drug possession and resisting arrest after being pulled over for speeding.

Courtney Lamont Ponder, 35, of 2665 SW 87th Place, was charged April 19 with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of drug equipment, resisting an officer without violence, and driving with a suspended license (habitual offender).

Marion County Jail records show Ponder with 12 previous arrests since 2003 on charges including battery, domestic battery, resisting, DUI, drug possession, aggravated assault with a firearm, and numerous incidents of driving with a suspended license.

Ponder was behind the wheel of a gold 2003 Nissan recorded by radar traveling 65 mph in a 45-mph zone along the 3500 block of South Pine Avenue. A Marion County sheriff’s deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop, but Ponder turned east onto SE 31st Street and north on SE 5th Street before finally coming to a stop at the 600 block of SE 28th Place, according to the sheriff’s office report.

Ponder got out of the vehicle and started running north behind a house. The deputy gave chase until Ponder surrendered by laying down on the ground just north of where his vehicle was stopped. He was detained and placed in the patrol car. Ponder told the deputy his license was not valid, and a computer search revealed he has never been issued a license, the report said.

A search of the vehicle turned up multiple packages, totaling 232.5 grams, of a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana, as well as a digital scale. Also found was a clear bag containing 2.5 grams of a white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine. Ponder also had a small metal grinder in his right pocket that contained a small amount of marijuana, according to the report.

Ponder admitted the marijuana was his and said he has been smoking the substance since a young age. He denied that he was selling and distributing marijuana despite having a large number of single packages and a scale. Ponder said he knew the white powdery substance was cocaine, but he denied it was his, the report said.

Ponder was arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released March 20 on $19,000 bond. No court information was available.
