The City of Traverse City will make applications available for recreational marijuana business permits on the city’s website starting on Friday, September 4 at 8am.

Permits will be available for up to four retail establishments and two microbusinesses in the city, with no limit on the number of growers, processors, secure transporters, or safety compliance facilities.   The city does not allow designated consumption establishments (“marijuana lounges”) or excess marijuana growers.

Applications will be available for all establishment types on September 4. For permits that will be awarded on a competitive basis (retail establishments and microbusinesses), the city clerk will accept completed applications beginning on Monday, November 30 at 8am and closing on Friday, December 4 at 5pm. This is the only period of time in which the city clerk’s office will initially accept applications for these business permits. For all other types of establishments, applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis unless otherwise indicated. Applications must be submitted electronically.

Retail establishment and microbusiness permits will be awarded on a competitive, scored basis. “It is generally anticipated, depending on how the application approval process plays out (factoring in time for appeals, etc.), that licenses for retail and microbusinesses will be awarded in January 2021,” according to a city release. “For all other license types, it is anticipated that a decision on the application will be made within 30-45 days of application submittal.”
