HUDSON – Kane Industrial Drive could soon be home to a new marijuana manufacturing facility.

Hudson native Brian Adams – who previously worked as a training content specialist at Wana Brands, the largest cannabis manufacturer in the country – is seeking a special permit to open Hudson Botanical Processing on Kane Industrial Drive. The location is within Hudson’s marijuana manufacturing and cultivation district, which includes Kane Industrial Drive, Brent Drive and Fox Road.

Adams, founder and CEO of Hudson Botanical Processing, has received a provisional license from the state Cannabis Control Commission and is obtaining a special permit from the town. Hudson’s Zoning Board of Appeals held a hearing on Adams’ application last week and continued it until May. Adams is hopeful the board will act on his request next month. The company would then be able to acquire its final license from the Cannabis Control Commission.

Hudson’s willingness to attract businesses in the marijuana industry played a large part in Adams wanting to locate his business in Hudson.

“Cannabis zoning is not easy to come by in the state,” he said. “…Hudson is extremely friendly to this kind of business.”

Hudson Botanical Processing aims to serve as a contract manufacturing service that will help enable licensed operators across the country and Canada to partner with the Hudson company to manufacture and distribute their productions in Massachusetts. Adams called Massachusetts a growing market for the cannabis industry.

“It’s a huge market,” he said. “I saw a really, really great opportunity to capitalize on that.”

Adams said the business does not include a retail component and will not be open to the public.

The company plans to purchase biomass from cultivators, extract it and infuse it at the Kane Industrial Drive facility, said Adams.

The proposed facility will have a full commercial kitchen that can make any infused edible product and an extraction lab, said Adams. Hudson Botanical Processing uses cryogenic ethanol extraction to produce the purest oil. The company’s proprietary process was developed and perfected in-house by leading biochemists. The extraction methodology allows the company to make its extracts more efficiently than conventional processes by cutting down on the steps needed for purification while increasing margins and quality, according to Hudson Botanical Processing’s website.

Each batch is tested in-house to ensure Hudson Botanical Processing is meeting the proper potency results and dosing requirements. Products will also be sent to a state-licensed third-party testing lab, according to the company’s website.

Adams told Zoning Board of Appeals members last week the manufacturing is done in a closed system so there should be no odor issues.

The company, which will only manufacture recreational marijuana, is hoping to open within the next 60 to 120 days, depending on the current coronavirus outbreak. The Cannabis Control Commission is conducting video inspections. Recreational marijuana businesses are not considered essential, according to the state.
