The site of a proposed marijuana dispensary in Peru. The City Council approved the special-use permit for Vermillion Partners.

A marijuana dispensary was given the go-ahead Tuesday by the Peru City Council to open in the former Jackpot Bingo location on May Road.

The planning/zoning commission recommended the special-use permit to open a marijuana dispensary for Jonathan Chamlin of Chicago under the business name of Vermillion Partners; on Tuesday, Peru council members approved it.

Vermillion Partners now will seek the state’s approval to open the dispensary.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation awards dispensary licenses and enforces compliance of laws on how they are to operate.

The location was determined to have no negative impact on its neighborhood, which runs along Interstate 80. The location was chosen by the developer because it provided ample parking. The dispensary could attract more than 100 guests daily, including about 12 regular employees. Its hours of operation likely would be between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Alderman Mike Sapienza said if marijuana sales are going to generate tax revenue for Peru, the council should decide where the money should go. He recommended the money go toward fighting drug issues or toward youth programs that steer children away from drug abuse, among other areas.

Additionally, the Peru council approved the special-use permit for Illinois Kindness Three LLC to operate a marijuana craft growing, infusing and transporting business on the southeast corner of Donlar Avenue and Unytite Drive.

This business will not sell marijuana from its property.

Similar to Vermillion Partners, it will need license approval from the state to open.
