A proposed restriction on cannabis cultivation sites to outside a half-mile exclusion zone around churches and schools may be dropped, the Government signalled tonight.

The announcement came after officials launched an online public consultation on draft legislation allow the cultivation and sale of cannabis on the island.

A Government spokeswoman said: Although public consultation doesn’t end until July, 3 consideration is being given to include licences for personal cultivation.

“Additionally the proposed section requiring half mile distances from churches and schools may be adjusted as a result of the public consultation.”

The spokeswoman added that the Government was “thrilled” by the level of interest and high number of suggestions from members of the public on the proposed regulated cannabis market.

She said: “There have been a number of comments posted on social media regarding the proposed policy and draft legislation. This community discussion is vital and we encourage everyone to review the draft policy document.”

The spokeswoman said: “We remind the public that the policy and legislation that have been presented are in draft form, meaning that there may be sections within both documents that may be altered following public feedback. “

She added that members of the public should read the policy document that break down the draft legislation.

The spokeswoman told the public: “Once you have reviewed the policy document and the draft consultative legislation, the public is encouraged to post their thoughts, suggestions and even criticisms on forum.gov.bm.

She said: “All of the submissions compiled at forum.gov.bm will be reviewed and will help to shape the future of the regulated cannabis market in Bermuda.”
